The Soundcraft GB4-40 is a 40-channel analog mixing console designed for professional audio applications, such as live sound installations in churches, performance venues, or small touring sound systems. Engineered with high-quality components, the GB4-40 features Soundcraft's legendary GB30 mic preamps and 4-band EQ, offering pristine audio performance and precision control over the mix. The console is ideal for front-of-house (FOH) or monitor mixing, featuring dual-mode topology that allows the engineer to switch between group and auxiliary output control via the faders.
Designed by Graham Blyth for Soundcraft's 30th anniversary, the GB4-40 represents the pinnacle of analog mixing, combining classic Soundcraft engineering with modern features. The GB4-40 is built to endure the rigors of professional use, thanks to its rugged steel chassis and individually-nutted potentiometers that provide mechanical stability. The console's layout is user-friendly and intuitive, ensuring that it can be operated with ease, even in high-pressure live environments. Its sloping rear connector panel allows for easy configuration from the front, making it simple to set up and adjust in different environments.
The GB4-40 includes 40 mono input channels, each equipped with high-performance GB30 mic preamps, providing excellent headroom and low noise, with individually switched 48V phantom power for condenser microphones. Each channel features the renowned GB30 4-band EQ with sweepable high-mid and low-mid bands, allowing for precise tonal adjustments to shape the sound. In addition to the mono inputs, the console has two stereo input channels, further expanding the versatility of the mixer.
Routing flexibility is a standout feature of the GB4-40, with 8 auxiliary sends that can be used for monitor mixes or effects sends, and 4 subgroups configured as stereo pairs. A unique feature of the console is the ability to adjust the stereo width of the subgroup signals independently of the mix, giving users control over the spatial characteristics of the audio. The built-in 7x4 output matrix allows for routing signals from the group buses and the main L, R, and C (mono) outputs to four independent outputs, offering exceptional flexibility for complex audio setups.
The GB4-40 also includes four mute groups, allowing the engineer to mute multiple channels simultaneously with the press of a button. This is particularly useful in live sound scenarios where quick control over several inputs is required. Additionally, the console is equipped with a limiter on the record output, making it easier to create distortion-free stereo recordings of the mix during performances. The GB4-40 also offers direct outputs on all mono input channels, making it ideal for live recording or integration with outboard gear.
With its comprehensive feature set, intuitive design, and rugged construction, the Soundcraft GB4-40 is an exceptional choice for professional audio engineers who demand both flexibility and reliability. The console's integral power supply can also be linked to an external backup PSU for added reliability, ensuring that the GB4-40 performs flawlessly in any situation.
