The Soundcraft GB8-40 is a 40-channel analog mixing console designed to deliver superior audio performance in professional live sound applications such as churches, performance venues, and small touring systems. With its robust feature set, high-quality components, and intuitive layout, the GB8-40 is a versatile solution for front-of-house (FOH) or monitor duties. This dual-purpose console allows engineers to control group or auxiliary outputs with ease, making it ideal for a variety of mixing scenarios. Built on the success of the Soundcraft GB4 series, the GB8-40 adds even more functionality, including an integrated output matrix and advanced metering options.

At the heart of the GB8-40 are the renowned GB30 mic preamps and 4-band GB30 equalizer, designed by Soundcraft co-founder Graham Blyth. These preamps deliver excellent clarity, headroom, and low noise, ensuring that every input signal is processed with precision. Each of the 40 input channels features individually switched 48V phantom power, enabling seamless use with condenser microphones and other powered devices. The GB8-40 also includes 4 full-feature stereo channels and 4 stereo returns, providing extra flexibility for handling stereo sources like keyboards, playback devices, or effects returns.

A key feature of the GB8-40 is the 11x4 output matrix, which allows you to route audio from the group busses and main L, R, and C (mono) outputs to four independent outputs. This capability offers incredible flexibility for creating custom mixes, sending audio to different zones, broadcast feeds, or recording devices. Additionally, the console is equipped with 8 auxiliary sends, which can be switched between pre- and post-fader operation, making it easy to configure monitor mixes, effects sends, or any other auxiliary signal requirements.

The GB8-40 is designed for versatility and includes 8 group sends that can be swapped with the 8 aux sends for flexible configuration depending on the application. This makes it possible to handle complex live sound setups with ease, whether for front-of-house mixing or monitor duties. Four mute groups allow multiple channels to be muted simultaneously with a single button press, providing instant control over key elements of the mix in live situations.

For precise control and monitoring, the GB8-40 includes a meter bridge with three LED VU meters that closely emulate the ballistics of traditional VU meters. These meters provide accurate, real-time visual feedback for the left, right, and center outputs, ensuring that you always have a clear view of your mix levels. The console also features a 1kHz oscillator for testing and calibrating audio systems, making it easy to verify signal flow and troubleshoot any issues.

Another unique feature of the GB8-40 is the built-in limiter on both the record output and the alternate stereo output. This ensures clean, distortion-free recordings and prevents level spikes that could damage connected recording equipment. The rugged steel chassis of the GB8-40 includes a sloping rear connector panel, making it easy to access and configure connections from the front of the desk. Additionally, the integral power supply has a link option for an external backup PSU, providing added reliability in critical live sound environments.

The GB8-40 is designed with durability in mind. All input modules are constructed with individual vertically-mounted PCBs and feature individually-nutted potentiometers, ensuring long-lasting performance even under the demanding conditions of live sound production. The console's comprehensive feature set and thoughtful design make it a powerful tool for live sound engineers who require flexibility, precision, and reliability.
