So you're interested in LED Panels?

We, and I’m sure most of you in the industries that use panels, have all had a barrage of emails from what appear to be panel factories, but are actually just trading companies that build websites showing they are a factory. In reality they are simply just purchasing low end panels from factories and selling them as their own brand at very low pricing. This can become a very slippery slope in navigating who the real factories are and who traders are.

So what factors will enter into making that decision?

  1. price
  2. components
  3. length
  4. location of warranty service
  5. reputation of supplier

At first look led panels seem like a straight forward simple product but this is the furthest thing from reality! Investing in an led screen is not like purchasing a moving light or speaker where the only considerations are brand and price. Requirements and needs will differ for each customer, such as indoor or outdoor panels? how close will the public be from the panels? Will live feeds and hd filming be a consideration?

Purchasing a display simply based on price will result in very unhappy customer.

So What should you be looking for & what questions should you be asking when purchasing led video panels?

Indoor or outdoor use?

Indoor panels are rated at roughly 800-1200 nits brightness where outdoor panels are rated at 4000-6000 nits brightness to compete with daylight.

Minimum Viewing distance?

What distance will the public be from the display? The general rule of thumb to calculate the minimum view distance is whatever the pixel pitch is in millimeters would be that same number in meters before you start to see pixilization on the leds

Ex: A 3.9mm pixel pitch video panel will have a minimum view distance of 12.79’ (3.9 x 3.28 = 12.79) of course any distance further the public will be than the minimum view distance, the better the resolution of the display will be.

What brand of LED's?

This is the most critical component on a panel that makes up roughly 80% of a panels value and rarely do you see panels advertised with the brand of LED's being used. There is a reason for this! Several factories have been, lets just say, less than honest! 500mm x 500mm panels have 4 replaceable modules with the LED's soldered on to them, 500mm x 1000mm size panels have 8 modules, a standard 2.9mm 10”x 10”module has 9000+ LED's. You can image the difference in cost to produce modules using high quality LED's against using cheaper lower quality LED's. The top LED brand is Nationstar, which we prefer since the color consistency is always right on and the LED's will last a lot longer. Kinglight is a step below nation star and is the 2nd highest quality brand modules manufactured with these LED's of course will be cheaper. After this is a place we choose not to go where you would see an indoor 500x500mm 2.9mm panel being sold for $300 or less, like anything else in life you get what you pay for. The quality of any product comes from the sum of it’s components, this will never change!

What IC chips are used?

There is an ic chip installed in every module this determines the video hz refresh rate at which the panel processes the signal you might have heard 3840hz is broadcast standard, this is another critical component it’s very important to know what the true refresh rate is on the panels being purchased and again this specification is rarely advertised from suppliers, having a high refresh rate is very important when doing live feeds or HD filming of the screen these applications would require a 3840hz refresh rate where in nightclub or production type applications a refresh rate of 1920hz would suffice, as previously mentioned a 500x500mm size panel has 4 modules/IC chips, 500x1000mm panel has 8 modules/IC chips so if there is $13.00 price difference from the 3840z chip the 1920hz ic chip this cost increase will add up quickly $52.00 more on a 500mmx500mm size panel.

What operating system?

NovaStar is the industry standard with the most common receiving cards being the A5,and A7, and if you wanted your 500x1000mm panel to be used horizontally this would require the NovaStar A8 receiving card.

So What Should A Reputable Company Be Able To Offer

We’ve been heavily involved in the panel business for the past 3yrs and have had extensive experience dealing with multiple factories. While some experiences have been really good others not so much! Scenarios where your head would spin saying what? Why? It has not been an easy process to say the least.

Now we fully understand why one 2mm panel is priced at $280 and another 2mm panel, which on the surface appears to be the same, is $800.

There are many cultural differences in how business is done in China and the US. There is a huge divide here on the logic of what is right and what is wrong.

This is why it’s very important to deal with a reputable company based in North America! Considering the size of this investment you need a company that knows exactly what they’re doing!
